This is Arduino LCD-and-buttons shield, compatible with the 4-bit Arduino library, but use "LiquidCrystal lcd(8, 9, 4, 5, 6, 7)". The LCD is 16 x 2 and has a blue backlight. The buttons are read out via the analog voltage on A0. As a start, turn the contrast potentiometer 20 (!) turns clockwise.
